Munich’s first new media art fair will take place from 17 to 20 January 2014

UNPAINTED media art fair 2014 launches with 50 international exhibitors

Munich’s first fair for media art will take place from 17 to 20 January 2014. A total of 50 exhibitors from around the world have announced their participation. A highlight of the programme is the “Lab 3.0” show, overseen by multimedia curator Li Zhenhua, with sponsored booths for young artists. In addition, the Dutch media artist Rafaël Rozendaal will hold a BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer) event at the fair.

At the UNPAINTED media art fair from 17 to 29 January 2014, a total of 50 exhibitors from the art capitals of the world will be represented with booths at the Munich Postpalast. Among these are influential galleries such as bitforms (New York), who will show works by the London-based artist Quayola in Munich. The Xpo gallery (Paris) is presenting works by the artist/hacker Evan Roth, Steven Turner Contemporary (Los Angeles) is coming to Munich with Rafaël Rozendaal and Petra Cortright, the arthobler gallery (Zurich) with the video artist Jakob Nepraš and the Danish-Indian artist duo Pors & Rao, who are renowned in their field for their extraordinary high-tech artworks. Further exhibitors include Galerie Charlot (Paris); Christinger de Mayo (Zürich), Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle (Munich), with the Danish video artist David Claerbout; THE VIEW (Silentien, Switzerland) and the Louise Alexander Gallery (Porto Cervo, Italy), with the French digital artist Miguel Chevalier. Galerie Anita Beckers (Frankfurt) with works by the Austrian artist Peter Weibel; the Merhart Art Gallery (Istanbul) and the TRANSFER gallery (New York) will also be represented at the fair.(The complete list of all exhibitors can be found at www.unpainted.net/en/exhibitors/)

New media art for explorers at Lab 3.0
One innovation that sets UNPAINTED apart from other art fairs is the “Lab 3.0”. In this section, the multimedia curator Li Zhenhua is presenting, in a total of 15 booths, the mostly unknown work of young artists from countries such as China, Brazil, France and Belgium, and will invite galleries, collectors and visitors on an exploratory tour.

Media art from its beginnings to the present day
Wolf Lieser (DAM GALLERY, Berlin and Frankfurt) is curating a media art retrospective on a separate stand especially for UNPAINTED. He will document the history of media art from its beginnings up to the present. Lieser is an internationally respected expert on the history of early computer art. The Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe also leads the visitors‘ attention to the roots of media art with a historic video piece by Wolf Vostell, a significant forerunner of video art. As early as 1958, Vostell was integrating TV equipment into his work.
“Through the multitude of participating galleries from around the world and the numerous works from different decades, the full range of media art in its full spectrum will be visible at UNPAINTED in the Munich Postpalast,” says Dr Annette Doms, Director of the UNPAINTED media art fair.

Bring Your Own Beamer
A further highlight of the UNPAINTED media art fair in Munich will be the performance of the Dutch artist Rafaël Rozendaal: Under the motto “BYOB” (Bring Your Own Beamer), Rozendaal is inviting local artists to project films and images onto the walls of the Postpalast with their own projectors, in a separate area of the fair.

As part of UNPAINTED’s satellite programme, the video artist Jakub Nepraš will show his large monumental video sculptures in the MaximiliansForum.

In addition there will be talks and panels with international art experts, workshops and concerts. A precise overview of the UNPAINTED programme will follow in the weeks before to the fair.
