A meeting with the international and local artists living in the newly erected artists’ camp, Artist in Residence 2014
Just like in the previous years, international artists arrived in Dresden prior to the exhibition to set up, or build in situ, their works for the O14. From their arrival to the artists’ camp (starting from the 8th of July 2014, 11:30) they are met with an unusual possibility; the artists of O14 have 10 days to meet and socialize before the opening of the 8th International Exhibition for Contemporary Art in Dresden as well as to observe the preparations first hand. The recently erected artists’ camp, set on the open-air space of the Ostrale, serves as a meeting point for the artists this year. It was designed especially for the Ostrale by Mattia Rizzi (IT) and Emmanuel Macaigne (FR) and was built on the spot with the assistance of hardworking helpers. Furthermore, during the exhibition it will be a meeting place for visitors and artists to discuss while also providing pleasant dwelling.
This year’s ‘Artist in Residence’ Program of Ostrale is closely knit with the Project ‘Private Nationalism’ and thus gave to international artists the possibility to live and work in Dresden for 8 weeks. The artists Sandra Collée (NL), András Csefalvaay (SK) and Safak Catalbas (TR) were chosen by an international jury to participate in OSTRALE and have by now submitted their work. They will be on the 8th of July available at the Artists’ Residence to discuss their work and outlook on Dresden. Artists from Dresden shall also be on site to speak about their Project: ’25 Years of Peaceful Revolution’.
Further Information about OSTRALE
The OSTRALE presents again this year international contemporary Art – versatile, stimulating, moving and provocative. The 8th OSTRALE will happen between the 18th of July and the 28th of Semptember. Every year at the OSTRALE artworks from every genre are exhibited. It is considered primarily as a platform for young and as of yet unestablished international artists.
Over 200 artists from 34 countries will in this year demonstrate how they understand, shape and live in the world around them. The former animal stalls of the historical Erlwein-Storehouse in the Dresden Ostragehege offer an unusual ambiance and a lot of room with an adjacent open-air space of over 15,000m2 as exhibition space for cultural meetings and delighting in art.
Ever more focal points shape the image of OSTRALE this year: The International Exhibition, the main part of the exposition as represented by artists who were selected by application or invitation. Furthermore, the touring exhibition Private Nationalism is also present, 50 international artists from 8 European institutions deal with the increase of nationalism in Europe. Special attention is merited to our immediate neighbour, the Czech Republic.
The project Renewed Horizons refers together with the Künstlerbund Dresden e.V. and the University for Fine Arts to a current artistic discourse in Saxony: 25 Years of Peaceful Revolution. Mission O14 will be by the artist group SPARTNIC/ Weightless Artists Association represented and will be preoccupied with the interface between Fine Art and Space Travel, between new spheres and the mundane.
Besides the exhibition in the former animal stalls of the historical Erlwein-Storehouse, works of Art of the OSTRALE will stimulate and enrich the city of Dresden. On Wednesday the 18th of June will be exactly one month before the opening of the Ostrale O14. Our Preview in the villa Baumgarten by Albertplatz will present as an excellent prelude Andreas Hegewald, Guido Hofmann and Thomas Kühnapfel, three renowned OSTRALE artists in an idyllic garden. A highlight of the evening was the handing-over of a check by the general representative of the Allianz, Carsten Hösel, in front of the numerous guests. By means of the generous donation the artist Thomas Kühnapfel was sponsored.
